COVID Pivot - Starting a New Business

It’s a scary thing, starting your own business.  I’ve always wanted to do it but never had the incentive until last year when COVID hit and events necessitated the need to start one. I lived with entrepreneurs my whole life. My parents owned their own businesses and did very well.  My husband has a business, Wapiti Straps, that I’ve helped him with, but I needed one of my own.

Why now and how it all began? COVID! For the past few years, my daughter, Amanda, and I were planning and looking forward to a trip to London. 2020 was going to be the year.  Of course plans fell through, so I had money burning a hole in my pocket and decided to get my dream dog. Growing up in the 60’s and watching the TV series “Lassie”, I’d always coveted having a rough collie of my own one day.  Amanda was on the search and found me a puppy that would be ready to go home on my birthday, it was meant to be, right?! As we were researching, I made the decision that I would breed her, so I told Amanda I would need to set up a business for my collies.  Then everything snowballed from there.

Amanda, who is über creative came up with the idea to add a few businesses together.  I’ve always loved stationery, which came from being a librarian for 15 years and being around books, writing instruments, to do lists, pens and everything stationary. It was natural to have my own line.  Amanda is the artist on all of the designs!

Why the name Bluebird Perch?  On the curve of our driveway stands a juniper tree. One day in early spring during the first year living in our new house, I spotted at least a dozen bluebirds perched on the gnarled gray branches of that tree. The image stuck with me and every year for the past four years, the bluebirds migrate in the spring and use our property to live, mate and raise their babies. Thus Bluebird Perch was born.

Even though it is scary to begin something new, I’m so excited for the journey. It all began with a new puppy, whose name is London, by the way! We might not have made it to London last year, but pivoted onto a new exciting adventure.  Thank you for traveling with us!
